COLOR-CHANGE GARNETS.

Are you ready for something completely different? It has often been said that Garnet comes in every color but blue. We can now say that statement is false. We would like to introduce you to color-change Garnet.

This amazing gem is extremely unusual in that is changes color from an intense teal blue to magenta purple. The only other gem to have such a color change would be the ever-elusive natural Alexandrite. Natural Garnet changes from blue green in daylight to a purple in incandescent light, with a distinct change between the colors. Never before have we seen anything like this gem.

It has all of the incredible features of Alexandrite and yet because it is Garnet, it is more brilliant than most gemstones. After much detailed testing, it has been determined that this unique color-change Garnet is the mixture of two different Garnet species, Pyrope and Spessartine. The Garnet family has many different varieties, which tend to blend with one another and create their own variety, such as Rhodolite Garnet being a blend of Pyrope and Almandite Garnets.

This unique blend of Garnet has been located in the town of Bekily in Southern Madagascar. This seems to be the only deposit where the intense color-change Garnet is found. There are other Garnets that change from pink to yellow, but none as dramatic as the blue green to magenta variety. Mining and production has been very sporadic throughout the years and is still done on a very rudimentary scale. The largest gems seem to be around the 9.50ct range and are very scarce.

Coffin and Trout has acquired a rare assortment of these fascinating gems and we invite you to stop by and see some of nature’s most intriguing gemstones. Their unique color makes them a perfect compliment to black Tahitian Pearls, or you may consider them a more fascinating alternative to black Diamonds.
