BLUE SAPPHIRES
What is your favorite color? If you are like half of the population, the answer is blue. Luckily for you, Sapphire can achieve the pinnacle of color when it comes to blue. We associate the color blue with feelings of sympathy and harmony, friendship and loyalty: feelings which belong to qualities that prove their worth in the long term and fit in with everything that is constant and reliable. That is one of the reasons why women in many countries wish for a Sapphire ring on their engagement. Gem lore tells us that Sapphire has long symbolized truth, sincerity, love, friendship, and faithfulness. Ancient Persians believed Sapphires gave heaven its blue

color, and some believed that the heavens formed a huge Sapphire to act as a support for the earth, and its reflection colored the sky. Tradition holds that Moses was given the Ten Commandments on tablets of Sapphire, making it the most sacred gemstone. Because Sapphires represent divine favor, they were the gemstone of choice for kings and high priests. The British Crown Jewels are full of large blue Sapphires, the symbol of pure and wise rulers.
The most important considerations for the evaluation and valuation of a Sapphire are color, size, quality of the cutting and clarity. Sapphire gemstones are also valued by the source of origin and degree of treatment. A Burma or Kashmir Sapphire gemstone will have a higher value than a Sri Lankan Sapphire of equal quality.
Source can be determined by gemological tests so this has become an important criterion in valuation of very fine, larger gem Sapphires. The treatment of Sapphires also plays an important factor. Natural, untreated Sapphire gemstones will have a higher valuation than a similar quality heat treated Sapphire as they are much rarer. Color is of course the most important consideration when buying a loose Sapphire. The bright light of day makes most Sapphires shine more vividly than the more subdued artificial light of evening. Keep in mind that most people say, "The darker the Sapphire, the better" when in fact they should be saying "The more intense and rich the blue, the better."
