Our Story

Our Founders

Randy Coffin

Since 1984, “looking forward” are two words that best describe the way we have conducted our business. We are always researching new technologies that will allow us to stay on the cutting edge of both production and design. We continue to further our education and training in order to ensure you, our patrons, that we are providing the finest jewelry and the most accurate information available. Your decision to include us in celebrating the significant moments of your life is not taken lightly. Our entire staff is dedicated to doing whatever it takes in order to provide you with an experience that far exceeds your expectations.
If you are new to the Coffin & Trout family, we welcome you, and truly hope you will allow us the opportunity to prove that we can make any occasion in your life just that much more special. For those we’ve had the pleasure of serving, we want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. It has been so enjoyable to get to know so many of you on a very personal basis. Looking to the future, we remain committed to offering you exquisitely designed, wearable pieces of art that will be enjoyed by generations to come.

David Trout

As one of the founding partners of Coffin & Trout Fine Jewelers, the late David Trout had a wonderful opportunity to touch many people’s lives. David’s spirit and legacy will live on in Coffin & Trout Fine Jewellers and in all of the family members and friends he left behind. His true passion was design. David earned numerous national and international design awards. His innovative Pagoda ring, featured in Coffin & Trout’s Masterpiece Collection, is on display at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. This ring was donated as a tribute to David, his passion and artistic innovation. The emerging designer wore many hats in the industry before finally meeting his business partner, Randy Coffin, in 1979. They quickly became friends and the creative spark was lit. Making unique, beautiful and functional jewelry, while offering unbeatable customer service was the foundation for their company and earned them the respect of their customers and colleagues. David’s infectious smile, quick wit and genuine manner were the reasons that people were drawn to him. His charm and honesty were why you stayed. Dave, you are greatly missed.

Our Team

A vision for well-crafted designs and exceptional customer service was born in 1984 by founders Randy Coffin and the late David Trout.

Coffin and Trout offered their designs at a good and fair value with exceptional customer service. Each member of our Coffin & Trout family is committed to these elements and they are as true and fundamentally important to how we do business today as they were then.

In addition to our custom designs, we are happy to offer jewelry and watch repair, appraisal services for insurance and estate valuation and corporate incentive programs. Our diverse team includes master jewelers, an educated sales staff and administration, a CAD/CAM designer, GIA Graduate Gemologist and an AGS Certified Gemologist Appraiser. It is our privilege to share with you the intense passion we have for what we do and to offer you a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

We promise to create a very personal piece of jewelry that will forever represent one of the memorable moments of your life.

I am honored to have joined the Coffin & Trout family. I can remember growing up as a kid and watching my father working behind the bench. I now look back and see that jewelry has always been in my blood. Given this opportunity, I am eager to not only continue the amazing legacy that Dave Trout and my father have created, but build it into something even greater.

I enjoy working at Coffin & Trout because we have built our company around unique, imaginative and artistic designs. Through the years, we have developed our Paragon ring shape as well as established our name in the jewelry industry for our Spectrum Awards, uncompromising quality standards, impeccable craftsmanship, limited production and copyrighted designs. I value and cherish my relationships with my clients, creating magnificent jewelry that will be a part of their heritage. I also am extremely proud of the philanthropic culture of our company and its employees.

There is something uniquely fulfilling about helping someone find the perfect piece of jewelry to express individual taste, style and emotion. What I've come to realize is we don't simply build and create jewelry but we share in life's precious moments and memories. I am blessed to enjoy the relationships and friendships this brings and proud to continually expand what we consider our "Coffin & Trout family".

The best part of my job is delivering a finished piece of jewelry to someone. The reaction of screams, tears, sighs, joy and hugs is always moving to me.

With a formal education in Russian Language and Counseling, somewhere along the way my path diverged to Metalsmithing and Jewelry Making. I have a great appreciation for the fine works of the Masters, Fabergé for example, and am inspired by beauty, refinement of skill and the crafting of beautiful objets d’art with exquisite materials. I appreciate the opportunities I have here to work with such fine people and fine goods.

I started making jewelry while getting my BS in Environmental Studies from State University of New York in Buffalo. I've been working in the jewelry industry since 1999 and have been at Coffin & Trout since 2003. Working with state of the art technology, brilliant rare gems and the amazing people at Coffin & Trout has pushed my jewelry skills to levels that I could not have thought possible.

I’ve always wanted to work for Coffin & Trout; ever since I saw them in the trade magazines and how many Spectrum Awards they won. As a second-generation jeweler, it’s great to work for a company that is on the cutting edge of technology and design.

As a Graphic Design major in college, I fell in love with metalsmithing and added it as a minor. After moving across the country, I was looking for more than just a job. I have a great opportunity here to apply both my degrees and to work with such creative designs. I have learned so much as a jeweler and feel like it is my home away from home.

In 1991, as a senior in college working on my jewelry design degree, I took a chance and called Coffin & Trout for some advice. That was the day my life plan changed; not only did Dave Trout give me his time and advice, but also that conversation became the driving force behind my move across the country from Ohio to Arizona. I have always admired Coffin & Trout’s ability to stay on the cutting edge of style, yet continue to have a refined elegance to each creation we produce. Being at C&T has afforded me the luxury of being able to work with some of the finest gemstones in the world so I get to be the proverbial ‘kid in a candy store’ everyday.

It has been my pleasure to be associated with Coffin & Trout Fine Jewellers for almost two decades. I had not worked in retail before so it was, at times pretty crazy, but perseverance and a great team have made these many years fly by. It seems like I’m always learning something new & exciting whether it’s different colored diamonds, colored gemstones or unique computer programs. Diverse is what I experience daily. I am so thankful for having the privilege to be part of the Coffin & Trout team.

I have been employed as Randy Coffin’s controller for over twelve years. I can say without reservation that Randy is one of the finest individuals I have ever met. His integrity, his caring, and concern for his employees is unmatched in my view. His community spirit and generosity leave me in awe. He is a gentleman in every sense of the word. We are all, quite frankly, honored and proud to work for him and with him.
This same integrity, caring and concern is what you will experience as a customer. You will feel it when you experience our designs, craftsmanship and service. I truly do not think you will find a finer jeweler to work with anywhere in this country.

Philanthropy

It is an integral part of this company’s culture to be actively involved in the community that gives us so much. From the beginning, Randy, Dave and their employees have felt a strong responsibility to give back to those around them. Over the years Coffin & Trout has given countless hours and more than $400,000 in merchandise donations and financial contributions.

Randy Coffin serves as a Board Member for the Tempe Diablos. Since 1968, members have devoted their time and energy to promoting, organizing and supporting community-based programs that focus on youth, education and the city of Tempe. This is accomplished by providing leadership and resources that create worthwhile opportunities for our Arizona youth. The Tempe Diablos are the 2nd largest private provider for Arizona State University scholarships.

Dave Trout served as a Board Member for the Phoenix Suns Charities. Incorporated in 1987, its mission is to be a constant leader in improving the quality of life in our community by benefiting organizations that assist the needs of children in Arizona. Since its inception, Phoenix Suns Charities, the team and their fans and sponsors have donated more than $10 million to worthy Arizona organizations.

Our sales manager, Dean Reiter, was accepted to join the Board of Directors in 2009 and is actively contributing to the work of the Phoenix Suns Charities.

In 2009, Brad Gould and Randy Coffin began the Dave Trout Memorial Golf Tournament to honor their friend and his commitment to charities he loved. With the amazing support of David’s parents, Marty and Barbara Trout, and the efforts of his family and friends, this event has been a resounding success.
