Coffin & Trout: AGTA Spectrum Award-Winning Jewelry
A Legacy of AGTA Spectrum Award-Winning Jewelry
Coffin & Trout has won 16 AGTA Spectrum Awards, one of the most respected honors in fine jewelry. These awards mark moments of innovation and vision, but more importantly, they tell the story of a house committed to creating jewelry that is bold, personal, and enduring.
The first Spectrum Award came in 1993 with a green tourmaline ring designed by Dave Trout. Yellow gold swept across the gem, diamonds framed the lines, and the design felt alive. It was the start of a journey that continues to shape the identity of Coffin & Trout.
In 2004, a men’s ring featuring a golden South Sea pearl was honored. The near solder-free construction was rare and complex, proving that technical achievement could stand alongside beauty. That piece is now part of the Smithsonian collection, an honor reserved for work of lasting cultural value.
Randy Coffin earned his first AGTA Spectrum Award in 2015 with a commission for the Somewhere In The Rainbow Collection. At the center was a tourmaline shifting from blue to pink, accented with pink sapphires, diamonds, and Paraíba tourmaline. It was bold in color and precise in form, and it showed how Coffin & Trout approaches design from both sides: creative vision and technical execution.
The most recent Spectrum Award came in 2023. The design featured a color-change zircon paired with grandidierite melee from Madagascar. Two hundred and fifty stones were counted and placed, a detail-intensive process that resulted in a ring of presence and originality.
Carrying Forward the Legacy
Sixteen awards are not the whole story. They are part of a larger philosophy built by founders Randy Coffin and Dave Trout. Both valued the unusual choice, the harder path, the solution that others avoided. Catherine Fitzgibbon, staff gemologist and appraiser, remembers it clearly: “Neither of them wanted to follow the crowd. They chose the unexpected solution, and that set them apart.”
That mindset continues today. Under Ryan Coffin’s leadership, Coffin & Trout honors its award-winning history while pursuing new designs that stay true to the same values. Each Spectrum Award reinforces what clients already know: this is jewelry that reflects artistry, precision, and individuality.
As highlighted in AGTA’s Spectrum Awards coverage, Coffin & Trout has built a reputation for AGTA Spectrum Award-winning jewelry that pushes boundaries and celebrates excellence. Sixteen wins define the past. The work in the showroom today defines the future.
